The 2011 Kennett Square Open is now in the books!

On Saturday July 9th, 2011 at Anson B Nixon Park the Squares Disc Golf Club hosted the 2011 Kennett Square Open (KSO). The KSO tournament is a showcase of the long layout of our course. This is a challenging layout with par set at 63. We had 59 players on this beautiful summer day.

The first round saw Devon Frederick, John Genter, Nate Krahn and Jake Azato set the pace in the Open division with first round scores of 58, 59, 59 and 60. The second round in the Open division had Nate Krahn continue to shoot well with a 58 while Jay Klein made a huge run in the second group to score the lowest round of the day with a very hot score of 55! This put him in a tie with Nate at 117. It was sudden death at hole one with the entire gallery of players lined up to watch. Nate won the playoff and took first place and $215.

In the Advanced Am division we had Tommy Poplawski set the pace with a score of 62 and finished out front of the field with a final score of 128. Dan Clompus spent the entire day chasing Tommy but could not quite catch up and ended up 2 strokes out in the end. The layout made scores much higher than expected with only a few rounds under par for the day.

In the Masters division we had 10 players with Bryon McAlees scoring a 3 under par 60 in the first round. Jimi McIvain and Marc Schoettle set out to chase Bryon down but the first round score of 60 was just too much to overcome.

Grandmaster division had the minimum 3 entants with Trevor Willey taking home 1st place over Paul Kelly and Ray McLaughlin

Congrats to the only females in the Pro and Am divisions. Sue (Super took the Pro Women and Jenn Wardell claimed the Am Women div. In the Intermediate Am division 10 players with Brett Corday taking first place

After the rounds were finished Tommy Poplawski ran our popular Ring of Fire Competition. This is where everyone stands 25 ft away from the basket in a circle and shoots at the target. All who make their putt can continue to shoot until only one makes the shot. Loads of prizes were given out during this event. This also allowed for yours truly to finalize the scores and payouts.

Many thanks to our course groundskeeper Ray McLaughlin for the incredible amount of work on setting the long tees up. The course played beautifully. Thanks to John Genter for making the tee signs, score cards and caddie cards. Thanks to Bob Marley for the awesome stamp design for the tournament discs. Thanks to Tommy Pop for running the Ring of Fire. Most of all thanks to all the players who showed up to make the 2011 KSO another success. Cheers!

2010 Kennett Square Open

Beautiful weather greeted 37 disc golfers at Anson B Nixon Park in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania on Oct 2, 2010. The Pro divisions consisted of 11 Open players and 6 Pro Masters. The amatuer divisions had 8 Advanced players, 3 Adv Masters, 5 Intermediate entries, and 3 women to round out the tournament.

After a quick players meeting, the groups were sent out to their holes for a 9:30 start. CTP (closest to pin) were offered up on 4 holes. Holes 3 and 5 were for all AM players with another added for the women's division. Holes 7 and 11 were the other CTP contests for all Pro's. Hole 11 CTP was best 2nd shot.

After all the players were done their second round, the Squares hosted the ever popular Ring of Fire where folks line up 25 feet around a basket and throw putts until the last person to make the putt wins a prize. Buckets and buckets of prizes were won as the scores were finalized. For the last of all the fun, all players were sent to the top of the hill to shoot aCTP contest for a beach cruiser bicycle donated by Exton Beverage Co. All players took 2 shots at the basket.

The Kennett Square Open is traditionally played to showcase the long layout of the course. This year's tournament course is the work of 2 years worth of planning in which the Squares Disc Golf Club and the park hope to finalize with instalation of concrete tee pads this fall.
