SQUARES GET GROOVEY AT THROW TO KNOW
Saturday, July 8, 2006 Anson B. Nixon Park, Kennett Square, PA.
Last Saturday marked the long awaited return of a mid-summer event to Ol' Kennett Square Disc Golf Course and man did it please!
Kennett was in the best mid-summer condition since the course went in, in 1996. With the Squares Disc Golf Club hosting their first event, having formed just over 3 months ago, put their best foot forward in a fund raiser for the Autism Society of America - Greater Philadelphia Chapter.
Last Saturday saw the return a more than just Summer Tourney Play at Ol' Kennett Disc Golf Course,
As a member of the Squares I can say that we hope you all had as good a time playing in the Throw To Know as we did running it. 'Tis but a sweet remembrance now, but what a great day it was. For those of you there you know what I mean, for those that weren't here are a few things you missed in no particular order:
1) “Hometown” Tim Kady’s nearly triumphant return to the Open Division (and disc golf for that matter) only to get hosed with a spit-through on hole 1 of the playoff to give "Missing" Linc Morgan the Open Title.(Yes, Kady paid me to write that...)
2) Keiko “Monkey Paw” Kight playing in her second tournament in 5 years, the previous being Paw Paw 2004! (This ranks as my greatest victory at the event.)
3) Sam “Cat Book” Gordon shot some of the best golf of his young life, winning Juniors under 14 and getting to watch Dad (see #4)
4) MC Steve “Libby” Gordon, aka Yorg, do a great job as TD and Front Man for the event.
5) “The Princess” Emily Genter performed some real magic in pulling off a tremendous first effort. Great job Emily!
6) “The Squares” got downright groovadelic coming together to whip the notoriously foul mid-summer course (chest high-grass and many downed trees) into fine tournament shape and then spread good karma day of. And a huge thank you to the “Parks Guys” John, Bill and Mark for all the work you did in getting the grass cut out there. Without you there’d be no tournaments in July at Kennett.
7) Near “$5,000.00” in cash raised for the Autism Society of America - Greater Philadelphia Chapter in funds raised by the Throw To Know! (approx.)
8) Get this: “92” participants playing disc golf on a crisp cool day! Handing out 400 flyers (so long as it isn’t to the same person) seems to work pretty well. As do radio and TV spots and with, shall we say, not shy Squares spreading the word.

10) Paul “Sweetfingers” Kelly getting a cool $57 for acing hole 17.
11) Super lunch AND breakfast provided by sponsors and smilingly served by Squares.
12) “Free (GOOD) Beer”. (I think that’s all that need be said there.)
13) How about you? What were your memories of the Throw?
As a fellow Square, you might think I’m a little biased, well you’d likely be right; but I can’t tell you how far out it was to see my fellow club members fully enjoying the fruits of their labors and for the players to share in that joy.
And this is only the beginning…
Saturday, September 30, 2006, Kennett Square Open – come see the other side of the best kept secret on the East Coast. Warning has been given: If you don’t like “Golf”, with par 3s, 4s and yes 5s, then steer clear. This layout has been known to beat more than a few folks brains in. With the whole Square crew signed on once again to make the event the best we can manage it should be a lot of fun. (Ams will play White Tees, only Pro divisions will play the Big Boys.)
So as the old saying goes, “Be There or BE SQUARE!”
